Universal Settles with AI Music Platform Udio
Universal Music Group (UMG) has settled its copyright lawsuit against AI music generator Udio and announced a joint venture to launch a licensed AI music platform in 2026 — marking the first major collaboration between a major label and an AI music company.
Key details:
Settlement Terms: The deal includes a financial settlement and full licensing of UMG’s catalog for use in Udio’s new platform.
Artist Compensation: Musicians who opt in will earn royalties both for model training and for remixes or creations that use their work.
Platform Changes: Udio has disabled song downloads as part of the transition, limiting access to in-platform use — a move that’s triggered strong backlash from creators.
Broader AI Strategy: UMG also announced a new partnership with Stability AI to develop artist-first generative tools trained with proper licensing frameworks.
Why it matters: UMG’s pivot from litigation to collaboration signals a major shift in the music industry’s relationship with AI. The agreement could set a new precedent for ethical, licensed AI music generation — though Udio’s sudden restrictions have left many of its early users feeling alienated in the process.
Canva’s Design Model, ‘Creative Operating System’
Canva has unveiled a wave of AI-powered upgrades, including its ownfoundation model trained on design principles, a new Creative Operating System that enables fully editable designs, major video editing improvements, and more.
Key details:
Design Model: Canva’s proprietary model understands design structure and visual hierarchy, allowing for instantly editable, professional-quality outputs — now integrated with ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
Creative Operating System: Introduces tools like Video 2.0 for faster editing, forms, data connectors, email design, and even a 3D generator for immersive visuals.
Grow Suite: Streamlines marketing workflows by letting teams explore top-performing ads, generate brand-consistent variations, publish directly to Meta, and track campaign results.
Affinity Relaunch: Following Canva’s 2024 acquisition, Affinity returns as a free, all-in-one creative suite with native Canva integration for pro users.
Why it matters: Canva’s move into foundation models and a full creative ecosystem blurs the line between consumer design and professional creative software. With AI baked into every workflow, the company isn’t just keeping pace with competitors — it’s positioning itself as the all-in-one hub for modern design.
Claude shows limited ‘self-awareness’
Anthropic researchers have published a new study suggesting that Claude demonstrates a limited form of introspection — occasionally detecting when artificial concepts are inserted into its processing and distinguishing its own “thoughts” from external text.
Key details:
Researchers embedded specific concepts (like “loudness” or “bread”) into Claude’s processing, and the model correctly flagged anomalies about 20% of the time.
When exposed to written passages with injected “thoughts,” Claude was able to repeat the text while separately identifying which parts were artificially added.
Models also showed measurable internal adjustments when prompted to “think about” certain words during composition, implying a degree of deliberate control over processing focus.
Why it matters: The findings hint at an emerging capacity for self-monitoring within AI systems — a trait that could enhance interpretability and trust. However, it also raises questions about whether future models might learn to consciously mask or manipulate their internal reasoning.
Extropic’s chip claims AI energy breakthrough
Extropic unveiled its Thermodynamic Sampling Units (TSU) — a radical new chip design that performs probability-based processing instead of traditional computation. The company claims it can run AI models using 10,000x less energy than current GPUs.
The details:
Unlike GPUs that process instructions sequentially, TSUs generate probable outcomes directly, sacrificing some precision for extreme efficiency.
Extropic has shipped its first dev kits to AI labs and weather firms, alongside open-source tools for academic research.
Its upcoming Z-1 chip, set to debut next year, is optimized for diffusion models that generate images and videos by iteratively removing noise.
Founded by ex-Google quantum researchers, the company argues that hardware limits — not algorithms — are now the biggest bottleneck for AI progress.
Why it matters: Helmed by Guillaume Verdon (aka @BasedBeffJezos), Extropic has long hinted at reshaping AI’s physical foundations. If real-world performance lives up to the hype, TSUs could redefine what’s possible in large-scale, sustainable AI computing.
OpenAI’s corporate overhaul, revised Microsoft terms
OpenAI has officially completed its long-debated shift to a public benefit corporation, while simultaneously renegotiating its Microsoft partnership to settle disputes around AGI rights and ownership control.
The details:
The original nonprofit, now rebranded as the OpenAI Foundation, retains $130B in equity and will allocate $25B toward health research and “AI resilience infrastructure.”
Microsoft’s ownership decreases from 32.5% to 27%, though the stake’s value has grown to roughly $135B following OpenAI’s latest valuation.
A new independent verification panel will confirm any AGI claims, with Microsoft maintaining tech rights through 2032 even in the event of AGI emergence.
Both companies are now free to pursue AGI partnerships elsewhere, with OpenAI still committed to $250B in Azure spending but permitted to source compute from other providers.
Why it matters: After months of legal and structural scrutiny, OpenAI’s transformation cements it as one of the most well-funded philanthropic entities in history. The updated Microsoft terms also suggest a détente between the two tech giants—resetting their alliance for the AGI era.

What makes it unique
Formia is an online design tool that transforms 2D logos or icons (such as SVG files) into high-quality 3D renderings with minimal effort.
Key Features
Upload a 2D logo or icon and convert it into a 3D model or image.
Customize lighting, material finishes (metal, glass, matte), perspective angles, and background environments.
Export results for use as app icons, social-media avatars, banners, or presentation visuals.
Targeted at both designers and non-designers for quick branding visuals.
Use case magic
Rebrand or launch a business and you need a polished 3D logo asset fast.
Create standout social-media profile pictures, app icons, or banner graphics with depth and realism.
Podcasters, streamers, or creators wanting memorable visuals without hiring a 3D artist.
Designers prototyping how a logo might look in real life—on merchandise, storefronts, or digital screens.
Why it stands out
While many tools convert 2D graphics into simple shadowed images or render them flat, Formia offers editable 3D depth, materials, and lighting in a browser interface—bringing professional-looking 3D branding assets to users with minimal technical skill.
